Hundreds join annual rowing race

HUNDREDS of rowers took part in an annual boat race at Bristol's Harbourside this week.

City of Bristol Rowing Club invited 400 rowers and their coxes to the event on Sunday as it staged its annual 3,300 metre "head race".

Ninety-nine crews from across the south west raced from Totterdown Lock to Baltic Wharf in two divisions at 11.30am and 2.30pm.

Rowing boats of all sizes and classes took part including eights, coxed and coxless fours, quads and sculls.

As they sprinted to the finish line at over 35 strokes a minute they passed Temple Back, Castle Park, Welshback and Redcliffe before passing beneath Princes Street Bridge and into the main docks.

A fifth of the entries were for junior – aged 18 and under – competitors and a third were for women's teams.

Winners of Saturdays races were awarded a range of trophies, prizes and shields. The club has seen an increasing number of young people wanting to learn to row and runs a coaching programme with a number of Bristol schools.

During the summer the club will be running taster sessions and an adult learn to row course.

Club Captain Martin Downey expects more people will want to have a go at rowing in this Olympic year. The club already has 200 members and has been rowing on the Harbourside for more than half a century.

More information about the race and City of Bristol Rowing Club can be found on their website at www.bristolrowing.co.uk.
